Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a non-ionic cellulose ether produced from natural polymer cellulose through a series of chemical processes. It appears as a white to off-white powder or granule, odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. It dissolves in cold water to form a transparent, viscous solution.
HEC features excellent water retention, thickening, film-forming and anti-mold properties, making it a versatile additive widely used in coatings, construction, oil drilling, toothpaste, and many other industries.
| Parameter | Value |
| Appearance | White to off-white powder or granule |
| Odor / Taste | Odorless, tasteless |
| Softening Temperature | 135 - 140 °C |
| Bulk Density | 0.35 - 0.61 g/ml |
| Decomposition Temperature | 205 - 210 °C |
| Solubility | Soluble in cold & hot water; insoluble in most organic solvents |
| pH Stability | Stable within pH 2 - 12 (viscosity varies slightly) |
| Surface-Treated Dissolving Time | Approx. 30 min (disperses in cold water without lumps) |
Broad Solubility Dissolves in both cold and hot water with no precipitation under high temperature or boiling. | Non-Ionic & Salt Tolerant Coexists with various water-soluble polymers, surfactants and salts; ideal for high-electrolyte solutions. | 2x Water Retention Twice the water retention of methyl cellulose with good flow regulation, stability and anti-mold. |
Water-based Paints Significantly improves thickening and levelling performance for latex coatings. | Oil Drilling Improves mud carrying capacity, prevents water intrusion and stabilizes oil well production. |
Construction Materials Effective thickener and binder in cement slurry and mortar; improves water retention and reduces early cracking. | Toothpaste Salt- and acid-resistant with high water retention and emulsification to prevent paste drying. |
Water-based Inks Provides quick-drying and non-penetrating properties for inks. | Other Industries Textile printing, paper making, daily chemicals, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and more. |
| 1. Add the specified amount of clean water into a container. |
| 2. Add HEC under slow stirring until all material is fully wetted. |
| 3. Add other components in the formulation and mix evenly. |
| 4. Viscosity develops in about 30 min, or adjust pH to 8 - 10 with alkali to develop viscosity quickly. |
